CIPSRT— the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment—has launched a free online store for printed materials that address the mental health and wellbeing of frontline workers.
Approximately 30 different resources—many printed in French as well as English—are available on this Print Material Request page. Anyone in the public safety sector looking for tools, resources and treatment in the areas of mental health and wellbeing can access these resources free of charge. CIPSRT will even ship them by ground courier at no cost.
You can link to the Print Material Request page here.
The materials are designed specifically for Canada’s first responders and public safety personnel (PSP), as well as those who support this sector. Included in this group are border services, corrections, communications, emergency management, fire, intelligence, paramedics, policing, and search and rescue.
The Print Material Request page offers posters, wallet-sized cards, fact sheets, and even a children’s sticker book. There are also sector-specific resources just for police officers or just for paramedics, to name a few.
The fact sheets focus on PSP mental health and suicide prevention within the sector. For example, first responders and PSP have been identified as experiencing higher rates of stress injuries and suicidal behaviours than the rest of the population.
Resources include wallet-sized reminder cards and accordion-style pamphlets on everything from how to support families of frontline workers, to how to find a clinician.
There are specific materials that outline what the sector can expect from the PSPNET website, which offers free, confidential, internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy known as ICBT.
Courses focus on general wellbeing related to anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress, to more targeted offerings on PTSD recovery and overcoming sleep difficulties. These courses are all self-guided and can be accessed any time of the day or night, but therapist-guided options are available in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI.
CIPSRT also has numerous digital resources that anyone can download and print, as well as infographics and screensavers with a mental health theme.
All resources come from evidence-based research and are designed and created specifically for those in the public safety sector, as well as their spouses and children.
Most materials are bilingual and work well when integrated as part of sector education courses, or onboarding new hires, or continuing education.
CIPSRT’S researchers and experts in the field are also available for free public speaking engagements. The printed and downloadable resources are designed to supplement these presentations.
