Gender-based violence

General public definition

  • Gender-based violence is currently not listed as a diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR or ICD-11.
  • Gender-based violence refers to any type of harmful behaviour against a person or group of people because of their sex, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Academic definition

  • Gender-based violence is currently not listed as a diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR or ICD-11.
  • The Government of Canada defines gender-based violence as “violence based on gender norms and unequal power dynamics, perpetrated against someone based on their gender, gender expression, gender identity, or perceived gender. It takes many forms, including physical, economic, sexual, as well as emotional (psychological) abuse.”30
