Developing a peer support group for public safety workers requires more than having an available room, a pot of coffee, and a box of donuts on hand. That’s why CIPSRT has collaborated with the Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families to create a peer support guidelines booklet.
The 50-plus-page document offers best practices on how to help those routinely exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events. Fear of being seen as weak is a major barrier to seeking help, but a peer support group offers a unique combination of lived experience and empathy to allow veterans and first responders the chance to heal.
The booklet addresses 10 core values and principles of practice, ranging from competence and confidentiality to non-judgment and trust. The guidelines delve into ethical practices and outline how blurred boundaries such as being available 24-7 can put one’s own health and wellbeing in jeopardy.
There’s important information on how to recruit peer supporters, and when to offer one-on-one support versus group support. There’s also information on legal and professional responsibilities, proper notetaking and securing of records, and how to evaluate a program’s effectiveness.
This booklet is a must read for any public safety organization planning to establish a peer support program for staff.
order limit: Maximum 20 pieces count per order.
